Goethe A2 Speaking Exam: Parts 1, 2 and 3 Explained
How the A2 pair speaking exam works, from personal questions to a short talk and planning something together.
The A2 speaking exam takes about 15 minutes for two candidates and has three parts. The examiner gives the instructions and transitions. Your task is to speak clearly, listen actively and keep the exchange moving.
Part 1: Personal information
You ask and answer short questions about personal topics. Go beyond a one-word reply when possible: “Ich fahre meistens mit dem Bus, weil er direkt vor meiner Wohnung hält.” Prepare flexible answers about work, study, family, free time, travel and daily routines.
Part 2: Talk about yourself
You receive a topic and prompts, then speak about your own experience. Use a simple structure: first answer the topic, then add two details and one reason or example. Linking words such as zuerst, dann, meistens, aber and weil make a short answer easier to follow.
Part 3: Plan something together
- Make a concrete suggestion: day, time, place or activity.
- React to your partner before adding a new idea.
- Give a short reason when you disagree.
- Finish with a clear decision that both candidates understand.
Useful interaction phrases
Practise phrases as complete actions: “Wie wäre es am Samstag?”, “Das finde ich gut, aber am Vormittag kann ich nicht”, “Dann treffen wir uns um drei” and “Einverstanden.” They help you respond naturally instead of delivering separate memorised sentences.
