Goethe B1 Listening: Four Parts, Repeat Rules and Strategy
A part-by-part method for the 40-minute B1 listening module, including which recordings play once or twice and how to handle distractors.
The B1 listening module lasts about 40 minutes and contains four parts. The recordings do not all repeat the same number of times, so your strategy must change from one part to the next.
The four parts
| Part | Audio | Main task |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Five short texts, twice | True/false plus multiple choice |
| 2 | One longer text, once | Five multiple-choice questions |
| 3 | One conversation, once | Seven true/false statements |
| 4 | One discussion, twice | Match statements to speakers |
Use the reading time actively
- Underline the difference between the answer options, not the words they share.
- Predict the type of information you need: reason, opinion, place, time or result.
- Mark negatives and restrictions such as nicht, nur, erst, trotzdem and obwohl.
- When the audio plays once, decide immediately and move with the recording.
Do not answer on the first matching word
B1 distractors often mention one option and then correct, limit or reject it. Listen through the contrast: “Wir wollten am Freitag fahren, aber der Zug war voll, deshalb nehmen wir den am Samstag.” The final decision, not the first plan, is the answer.
After practice, replay only the evidence sentence and write down why the wrong option was attractive. This turns every mistake into a listening pattern you can recognise next time.
