Goethe A1 Exam Format 2026: Sections, Timing and Pass Mark

The current Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 format for adults, with exact timings, task types, scoring and the 60-point pass rule.

The adult Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 exam tests four practical skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is a complete exam, not four separately bookable modules. Knowing the order and timing helps you practise at the right pace.

How the A1 score works

You can earn 100 points in total: 75 in the written exam and 25 in the oral exam. The official result page states that you pass with at least 60 points, provided that you complete every section of the exam. A1 is therefore scored as one whole exam.

What to practise first

  • Train short, everyday information such as times, prices, dates, addresses and opening hours.
  • Read the question before the audio or text and underline the detail that proves your answer.
  • Practise writing all requested information, even when your sentences are very simple.
  • Say your name, origin, home, languages, work and hobbies aloud without reading.

Use the official Goethe model test at least once under the printed time limits. It shows the real instructions, answer sheets and task sequence, so the exam day feels familiar.
