How to Prepare for Goethe A1: A Focused 4-Week Exam Plan

A realistic four-week plan for learners who already know basic A1 German and now need exam timing, task practice and speaking confidence.

This plan is for exam preparation, not for learning all of A1 from zero. Start by completing one official model test without help. Record the section, task type and reason for every mistake.

Week by week

  • Week 1: Learn the task formats. Practise times, dates, prices, spelling and form fields.
  • Week 2: Alternate reading and listening. Prove every answer with one word, number or phrase.
  • Week 3: Write one short message daily and practise all three speaking parts aloud.
  • Week 4: Complete two timed full tests, review repeated mistakes and reduce study on the final day.

Build an exam vocabulary, not a random list

Group words by situations that appear in A1 tasks: travel, appointments, shopping, food, family, work, housing, health and free time. Learn each noun with its article and each verb inside a short sentence.

Use your mistakes as the plan

A wrong answer should create one next action. If you confuse Dienstag and Donnerstag, train weekdays in audio. If you omit a writing point, use a three-box checklist. If you freeze in speaking, record ten short requests and answers.

Your final practice should look like the real exam: printed or digital tasks, the official timing, no dictionary and no pausing the listening track.
